Do you want your news coverage to be fair, representative, and inclusive of diverse voices and perspectives? We want to help, and to connect you with the deaf community.

Recent BBC programmes, like the drama Reunion or the documentary Old Hands, New Tricks, highlight some of the barriers, prejudices and inequalities that we are up against.

In the UK, there are stories waiting to be told of shocking injustice, beautiful human interest stories of dating or family tragedy, health reports, technology reviews, crime, parenting tips, political campaigns… any topic area you cover, there will be deaf people out there with a story or perspective that could and should be included in the coverage.

Join our free short deaf awareness training webinar for journalists and professionals working in news media. We will share deaf awareness information and tips relevant for journalists, as well examples from our own experiences of working on stories with the Guardian, BBC, ITV and local news.

12 June 2025 – 11am

Can’t make that time? We know you’re busy, so just book your spot and we’ll send you a recording and the materials after the webinar finishes.

What will we cover?

Topics:

  • where to find deaf people
  • how to conduct an interview
  • thinking about the best medium
  • anonymity considerations
  • terminology explained (deaf, hearing impaired, etc.)

Why is this urgent? Representation in the news could make a huge difference in any number of ways. For many of us, it would help us feel included in mainstream society, like our opinions and experiences matter.

At SignHealth, we aim to improve the health of deaf people and we do that through services we provide. But to address the root causes of inequality, we also need to raise awareness of our community and be included in local and national conversations.
