What is it for?

Many health services do not understand that a deaf person might have different communication needs and that their service needs to adjust to give us full access.

The NHS is legally required to meet our communication needs in accordance with the Equality Act 2010, Accessible Information Standard (DCB 1605 Accessible Information) and the NHS constitution.

It is important that we explain our communication preferences. If we give the information in writing, there will be a record of it.

This letter makes it clear to NHS services that we expect no more excuses, and no more barriers!

Hopefully, the health service will send you confirmation that your communication needs are recorded on your patient record.

If the information is not recorded, tell the health service you want to make a complaint.

If the health service does not meet your communication needs, please make a complaint.

Also, please let us know how it goes! We will use your feedback to improve the template and campaign for better access.
