Leukaemia is a type of blood cancer. It begins in the bone marrow and affects the white blood cells, which play a crucial role in fighting infection.

Around 10,000 people are diagnosed with leukaemia every year in the UK. It’s the most common cancer in children under five. There are several forms of leukaemia, broadly divided into acute and chronic types, depending on how quickly the disease develops and which white blood cells are affected.

Unlike many other cancers, leukaemia doesn’t form a solid tumour, which makes early detection more difficult. Symptoms can vary but may include frequent infections, night sweats, fatigue, and unexplained bruising or bleeding.

If you or someone you know is concerned, it’s important to speak to your GP and ask for a full blood count test.

If you’ve been affected by leukaemia and are interested in sharing your story, please contact Leukaemia UK. Raising awareness can help others to spot the symptoms.
