What is domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse can happen to anyone in a relationship or with family members. Domestic abuse may happen once or it could be ongoing for a long time.

Abuse between friends is not defined as domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse can include:

Physical ∙ slapping, pushing, hitting, pulling hair, biting, etc.
Sexual ∙ when someone does something to your body that you don’t want
Psychological and emotional abuse ∙ saying horrible things to you like you are stupid, ugly, a bad parent, worthless, or not allowing you to go out alone, checking on you all of the time, ignoring you
Economic abuse ∙ controlling your money
Coercive control ∙ controlling and bullying you to do things that you don’t want to do
Harassment and stalking ∙ following you, keeping track of where you go, sending you unwanted messages via social media or people
